23. इन विधियों में अपनी इच्छा के अनुसार गढ़ी हुई भक्ति की रीति, और दीनता, और शारीरिक अभ्यास के भाव से ज्ञान का नाम तो है, परन्तु शारीरिक लालसाओं को रोकने में इनसे कुछ भी लाभ नहीं होता।

23. मनमानी उपासना, अपने शरीर को प्रताड़ित करने और अपनी काया को कष्ट देने से सम्बन्धित ये नियम बुद्धि पर आधारित प्रतीत होते हैं पर वास्तव में इन मूल्यों का कोई नियम नहीं है। ये नियम तो वास्तव में लोगों को उनकी पापपूर्ण मानव प्रकृति में लगा डालते हैं।
